Busy summer of ASV nearshore pipeline and cable surveys for O&G Majors

ASV Harry has been busy this summer conducting nearshore pipeline and cable inspection surveys for three major Oil & Gas companies.

For the first survey ASV Harry was configured with a full geophysical spread consisting of an Edgetech 6205/2205 multibeam/sidescan with integrated DW424 sub-bottom profiler, the Applanix POS MV Wavemaster and a Marine Magnetics ASV specific magnetometer. It was possible to simultaneously acquire the data from all of the sensors.

For the next survey it was back to the standard configuration of R2Sonic 2020 and POS MV. This time working in very shallow water from 5m water depth to the shore, which was approx 2 km from shore (we stopped at 0.3m water depth). This survey also involved flying the eBee UAV for the topography and we managed to survey out to 1.0 m water depth in some places, thereby overlapping with the multibeam data and enabling a seamless model.

Up to Norway for the third survey with a stop in Kiel, Germany to pick up a General Acoustics SubPro 2545 sub-bottom profiler to trial. This was fitted to the same bracket as the R2Sonic 2020 and POSMV.

The previous two surveys were beach launches but for this survey we were able to use a small harbour with a slipway which made launching and recovering very easy.

We learnt a great deal on these surveys and ASV Harry is now back in Florida being upgraded with our feedback and SeaRobotics’ system upgrades.

SeaRobotics Delivers 3.6 Meter Collapsible ASV to USACE

SeaRobotics Corporation (SeaRobotics) has delivered an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for rapid post-hurricane hydrographic survey in the Caribbean.

After a severe climatic event, such as a hurricane, hazards to navigation impede the rapid delivery of aide as well as access to critical infrastructure through ports and harbors. Use of the SeaRobotics’ 3.6-meter, collapsible ASV will allow rapid deployment and completion of the hydrographic surveys necessary to re-open infrastructure enabling delivery of life saving goods and services.

“SeaRobotics is pleased to participate in improved disaster recovery efforts implemented by the USACE. As a Florida company, we are directly impacted by the need for rapid hurricane response and thrilled to be involved in the solution,” stated Don Darling, president of SeaRobotics Corporation.

The 3.6-meter ASV utilizes collapsible hulls, allowing transport in compact protective crates so the system can be airfreighted for rapid deployment. The system assembles from crates to deployment in less than 30 minutes. Working in partnership with Echo 81, the ASV integrates hydrographic survey payload, including an Edgetch 6205 sidescan/bathy multibeam echo-sounder (MBES), R2 Sonic 2022 MBES, Applanix WaveMaster POS MV inertial navigation system (INS), a SeaRobotics’ cast winch and a castable AML BaseX² sound velocity probe (SVP). The two multibeam systems were chosen to provide exceptional data quality in multiple marine environments, aiding in the rapid assessment of navigation hazards. The lightweight SeaRobotics’ cast winch deploys the SVP used to generate corrective sound velocity profiles by the onboard data acquisition computer.

“The rapid deployment and ease of assembly of the ASV, as well as the capability to launch the ASV from non-traditional locations will expedite the availability of crucial hydrographic survey results,” explained Geoff Douglass, ASV development manager at SeaRobotics.

In addition to the hydrographic survey payload, the ASV includes excellent situational awareness and enunciation aides. An automatic identification system (Class B AIS) is used to identify and track other vessels in the area and to enunciate the position of the ASV. Other aides include a real-time viewable PTZ video camera, navigation lights, an autonomous and remotely operated horn, a LIDAR based obstacle detection system, and streamlined data acquisition line planning and post processing interface system utilizing a SeaRobotics’ specific ASV driver for HYPACK Survey and HYSWEEP.

These systems leverage SeaRobotics’ extensive expertise and history delivering ASVs for high-precision bathymetric surveys, water quality analysis, hydrographic surveys, shallow water, force multiplier and many other applications. The ASV was delivered with a fully integrated Edgetech 6205 multi-beam echo sounder (MBES), R2Sonic 2022 with Type II I2NS motion reference unit and dual antenna GPS system, as well as a surface sound velocity probe and a cast winch deploying a CTD—all tightly integrated with HYPACK software.

The new water tank cleaning system provides operators with new levels of safety and efficiency.

STUART, Florida. – SeaRobotics Corporation (SeaRobotics) has announced the successful delivery of a TankBUG Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) system. Designed and constructed in its new high-specification manufacturing facility, the SeaRobotics TankBUG will now serve a leading water tank cleaning corporation in its efforts to provide safe and cost-efficient methods for removing sediments and debris from water storage facilities and reservoirs.

The TankBUG ROV system design consists of a vehicle deployed and operated within water storage tanks for sediment removal and inspection on the tank floor. A gas powered pump, separate from the vehicle and outside of the tank, creates the required flow and suction at the vehicle vacuum head transporting sediment out of the tank. Nimble and lightweight, the TankBUG can reach a water depth of 120 feet (36.6 meters) and can produce a suction flow of 100 gallons/minute (379 liters/minute) utilizing an umbilical and hose that is 250 feet (76.2 meters) in length.

As safety takes the forefront in confined space operations, the TankBUG represents a growing initiative to help provide the water tank cleaning marketplace with a viable approach for reducing and mitigating human risk in the industry. While human diver operations require a number of precautions like dual tethers and redundant air supply systems, the TankBUG ROV system can be deployed rapidly without these measures and still safely function.

The systems were sold and delivered through LinkOcean Technologies Ltd., SeaRobotics’ exclusive representative in China. The units will be used by two prestigious oceanographic institutions, The First Institute of Oceanography in Qingdao, and The Second Institute of Oceanography in Hangzhou to perform bathymetric surveys.

These recent orders leverage SeaRobotics extensive expertise and history delivering USVs for high precision bathymetry, water quality analysis, and hydrographic survey, as well as mine countermeasures, surveillance, targeting, and many other applications. The vehicles were delivered with fully integrated R2Sonic multi-beam echo-sounders, motion reference units, GPS systems, and sound velocity probes, with software from HYPACK to provide a complete autonomous unmanned, high precision, bathymetric survey system.

“The USVs will be used in estuaries and in the coastal zone for bathymetric survey. Dr. Ju Jun from The First Institute of Oceanography, and Dr. Lai Xianghua at the Second Institute of Oceanography, have declared they are very pleased with the performance of the systems,” stated Shuren Qin, President of Link Ocean Technologies.
